Jim Tressel Arrives as New Ohio Lieutenant Governor

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine named ex-Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel as the next of Office of Ohio's Lieutenant Governor on February 10, 2025. This address to an empty office created by Jon Husted, who took a seat in the U.S. Senate after promotion of J.D. Vance to the Vice Presidency of the United States.

From Gridiron to Governance

Nicknamed "The Senator" during his time at Ohio State, Jim Tressel has had perhaps one of the more interesting careers both on and off the field. Before he became appointed to that post, he was serving as the president of Youngstown State University; he retired from there in 2023 after nearly a decade. His educational and community involvement were mentioned by Governor DeWine as key reasons for his selection.

The highlight of Tressel's coaching career was the national championship of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2002, together with seven Big Ten championships. His style of football, sometimes referred to as "Tresselball," had the emphasis on defense and playing smart, which appealed to many within Ohio as a disciplined approach and one in which the final score often showed it. Now, as an administrator in higher education at Youngstown State, he has shown his leadership in fostering partnerships for economic development and workforce training.

A New Chapter

The appointment of Tressel into this political position has created a buzz of conversation throughout the state. As stated by Governor DeWine upon the announcement, "Jim Tressel knows Ohio, shares my values, and has the ability to pull people together. His experience in leadership and education will be invaluable in this position."

But the appointment isn't without its critics. Some question whether Tressel's background in athletics and education adequately prepared him for the complex subtleties of state government. Critics point to controversies from his past, including the NCAA infractions by his players that forced him to resign from Ohio State in 2011, implying his track record isn't spotless on matters related to oversight and compliance.

Community and Political Reactions

Social media is mixed: Ohio State fans and alumni like the fact with excitement that one of their own is getting a state leadership role, while others question his preparedness for such an important political position. Messages posted to X include Tressel's strong roots to Ohio, his crisis leadership in times of extreme difficulty at YSU, and the potential he brings for a fresh understanding of state governance.

With a strong Republican majority seen in the Ohio House and Senate, confirmation is most expected for Tressel. His nomination will surely face heavy scrutiny from both the left and the right as it zeroes in on his vision regarding Ohio's educational and economic policies.

Outlook

Tressel, 72, said he'll hit the books to learn the ways of state government. "I don't know this world," Tressel said during the announcement, "but I believe in our governor and what he believes in. My first job is to go to school on that."

With Tressel's appointment, Ohio may be getting a mixture of old-school conservative values and a focus on education and workforce development-the areas in which he has been so heavily involved. How well he will do in this position largely depends on how well he can translate his leadership style from the football field and university campus to the political arena in Columbus.

Whether Tressel can repeat those successes in football and academia at this level, nobody knows, but his hiring promises an interesting chapter in Ohio's political tale now that everyone has eyes trained on this ex-coach-cum-statesman.

Ohio State Football Is Steeped In Tradition

Go Ohio State Buckeyes!

The commercial 'Go Buckeyes' really cracks me up. Do you remember it? It's the one where a couple is introducing themselves to each other while the woman is driving. Suddenly it becomes clear that they're actually out on a blind date. The guy ends up jumping out of her car because she is chanting one of Ohio State's rival team's slogan. He not only jumps out of the moving car, but he screams back 'GO BUCKEYES' as loud as he can.

You may wonder why all the fuss over football. Well, it's way more than just football, it's pride and tradition. The Buckeyes have now been a part of the football world for a whopping 25 years. They take great pride in representing Ohio State University and competing in the Subdivision of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl. Their first season ever goes all the way back to 1890. All total they've won 7 national championships with 10 undefeated seasons as well as 36 Conference Championships. In 1942 they won their first ever national championship under the leadership of coach Paul Brown.

With such a rich history and tons of tradition tied into the Ohio State football team, it's no wonder why people get Buckeye fever during football season.

Talking About Ohio State 2014 Walk Ons

Florida Gators football head coach Urban Meyer...
Florida Gators football head coach Urban Meyer talks about quarterback Tim Tebow's commitment to service during the national championship football team's visit to the White House. Screenshot of a White House video. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Approaching the conclusion of the 2013 season, Ohio State competed against FBS schools with just 55 scholarship players. That is 30 fewer than what is allotted to major college program schools. On a travel roster 70 players are included. This shows the Ohio State roster could not have been filled with scholarship players and when they played Florida A&M shockingly the Rattlers actually in terms of scholarships had more resources.

Many questioned why head coach, Urban Meyer was so aggressive on having depth and bodies. He displayed no discrimination in terms of NCAA sanctions, injuries, redshirts and transfers.

Because of violations committed when Jim Tressel was in charge, there is for Ohio State a limitation of 3 scholarships to 82 for another extra season. To help prevent the roster from stockpiling Meyer is refusing to over sign. Thus, when over a four year period a transfer of 24 players was done, in terms of depth for the Buckeyes there was little left. There are 93 players on the entire roster including Ohio State walk-ons. 45 are underclassmen and 67 have scholarships.

A free pass should not be afforded by coaches on a roster so thin. In 2013, a group campaigning locally opposed to redshirting forced the decision to sit 19 players.Coach Meyer vowed not to let this happen again. Seven walk ons will take part in spring drills and in August another 16 will join the team. Ohio State in spring practice will have 67 scholarship players participating and in August that number grows to 82.

Braxton Miller has undergone shoulder surgery. At quarterback there will be a good competition going on. The starter Cardale Jones is not being looked on as the long term solution. The first quarterback signed by Coach Tom Herman was J.T. Barret and the expected idea is for him to spend a year as the understudy to Miller and eventually front a Meyer-Herman offensive.

The other good news is that running back is shaping up a deep position which works out well when replacing a 1500 yard runner.

Ohio State Buckeye Roster Thin Entering 2014 Spring Practice

When the 2013 season was coming to an end, Ohio State played with just 55 scholarship players against FBS schools. This is 30 less than what is allotted to major college football programs, and 8 less than FCS schools. 70 players are included in a travel roster. The Buckeye's roster could not be filled with scholarship players. Additionally, last season when Ohio State met Florida A & M, the Rattlers unbelievably had more resources in terms of scholarships.

Some may wonder why Urban Meyer, the head coach, was so aggressive on having bodies and depth. Attrition appeared in all forms as there was no discrimination in terms of transfers, NCAA sanctions, red-shirts and injuries.

For another extra season, there is a limitation of 3 scholarships to 82 for Ohio State due to the violations done when Jim Tressel was in charge. Meyer is refusing to over sign in order to prevent the roster from stockpiling. Thus, when a transfer of 24 players was done over a period of four years, there was little left for the Buckeyes in terms of depth. the entire roster is made up of 93 players, including walk-ons. 67 of them have scholarships while 45 are underclassmen.

Coaches should not be afforded a free pass on such a thin roster. A certain group that was vocally campaigning against red-shirting decided in 2013 to sit 19 players. Meyer swore never to let that happen again. Seven of Ohio State walk-ons will participate in spring drills, while an additional 16 will join the team in August. The Buckeyes will thus consist of 67 scholarship players taking part in spring practice. In August, the squad grows to 82 though at the moment it looks like they are over the limit by one. For Meyer however, thinning down the roster is better than filling gaps with inexperienced players.

Braxton Miller has just undergone surgery on his shoulder. The good news is that the quarterback position is rather intriguing. The departure of Kenny Guiton means there will be competition to fill the position. Cardale Jones will start in the position for the first day but is not expected to last long. J.T. Barret was the first quarterback to be signed by Coach Tom Herman. Conventional wisdom points to the fact that the Buckeyes will want him to spend a year as Miller's understudy. The Wichita Falls native has all the skills needed to front a Meyer-Herman offensive.

The running back is among the deepest positions for the team. This is a welcome thing given that Ohio State must find a replacement for a 1500-yard runner. The Buckeyes have for the last two seasons been fortunate to have substitute tailback when some running needs to be done.

Breaking News About Marcus Baugh Ohio State Football Freshman

Ohio State Football Player Marcus Baugh is alleged to have been cited for underage drinking this past weekend near the campus in Columbus.

Marcus Baugh a young Ohio State freshman tight-end, has allegedly been caught drinking underage once again. Just six months ago the receiving freshman consumed alcohol underage and today he is facing a second suspension for the same offense. Fans had hoped he learned a lesson after the first incident.

Last Friday on West 5th Avenue, near Dennison, Baugh was cited for drinking underage. Baugh is scheduled to appear at Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday. He could be facing a maximum jail sentence of six months and a maximum fine of $1,000.

Marcus Baugh was red-shirted last year and Baugh was a four star recruit from Riverside, California.

Baugh was cited for possession of false identification and underage drinking in July, he was then suspended for the Ohio State Football seasons opening game.

Certain sources stated that Baugh had learned his lesson and worked his way back into the good books. However, Friday's arrest leads many fans to arrive at a different conclusion. A source from the OSU feels that Baugh is unlikely to face another suspension. But a second citation could mean that Baugh loses out on two important Ohio State Football matches.

Fantasy Football Magazines

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 08: National Football ...Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Fantasy Football Magazines

As fantasy football becomes more and more popular, fantasy football magazines have become more prevalent. Fantasy football magazines are a great way to learn about some under the radar players, and they're a great way to learn about players who may be overrated. While fantasy football magazines are great tools to have to prepare for the draft, they should not be the only resource you use.

The top fantasy football magazines are great resources that offer valuable information to use during the draft. The problem with fantasy football magazines is that they are written and printed months before the National Football League season begins. This is why they should not be your only tool you use during your fantasy football draft.

A lot of things will change between the start of the preseason and the time that you hold your draft. Football is a violent sport and players get injured every game. During the preseason, players also win and lose starting jobs. This is why it is key to watch and read about the latest news in the NFL. Using this updated information with what you learn in the fantasy football magazines is how you win a fantasy football league.

It's impossible to be able to update and provide the latest news in a magazine. It takes time to print and distribute a magazine. By the time they got the magazines out, nobody would longer need them. This is why fantasy football magazines are designed as the beginning piece in your draft preparation.

If you are looking for good fantasy football magazines to read, consider taking a look at some of these:

  • ESPN Fantasy Football - This one gets picked on by some of the "cool" Internet players, but ESPN Fantasy Football usually offers at least some interesting articles that will broaden your knowledge and perspective related to the upcoming season.
  • Sporting News Fantasy Football Magazines - The scouting reports and myth busters articles are always worth reading.
  • Lindy's Fantasy Football Mock Draft - My favorite thing about this magazine is that it includes articles about each owner's strategy coming into the draft. It's nice to see this kind of high level thinking highlighted.

A better source of information for your fantasy football draft is the Internet. You should make your own cheat sheet based on the latest information. Or at least use one of the cheat sheets offered by a reputable site. But don't just rely on a fantasy football magazine, no matter how good it is. That's a losing strategy.

John Clifton wrote a detailed article with several fantasy football magazine reviews at his fantasy football tips site last year. Much of the information there is as useful in 2011 as it was in 2010.
