4 Diffrence Between Boxing And MMA

English:
English: (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Boxing has been the dominant combat sport in terms of revenues for several decades now, but its position is being challenged by the fairly new enterprise called Mixed Martial Arts. These two have a lot of similarities such as having individual competitors, weight classes, referees, and judges. However, they also have obvious distinctions. The difference between boxing and MMA include:

1. Fighting Styles

Boxing requires both fighters to remain upright and limits the attack to punches. Although the arms are the main offensive weapons, having excellent footwork is vital in getting into position. Meanwhile, head and upper body movements are crucial for defense. In MMA, fighters can punch, kick, and grapple their opponents. Knees and elbows are also in play. Most competitors train in numerous fighting styles such as Muay Thai, Jeet Kun Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Wrestling, and more.

2. Gear

Both sports mandate the use of gloves but boxers need superior hand protection because of their heavy use. MMA fighters use open type gloves of a lower weight to prevent cuts. As for footwear, boxers tend to use high cut laced boots which provide heel stability. In MMA, fighters are unshod since they use their feet for kicking.

3. Match Duration

Boxing matches tend to go on longer. They generally feature 3-minute rounds with 8 to 12 rounds per match. MMA uses longer 5-minute rounds but there are only 3 rounds in regular matches and 5 rounds in championship matches.

4. Match Area

Boxers fight inside a ring which is actually a square-shaped elevated canvas with flexible ropes around the perimeter that stops them from falling over. On the other hand, MMA fighters commonly enter a multi-side cage with metal fencing, though some organizations use boxing rings as well.

5 Cool Gifts for the Young Martial Artist

MartialArtStaff1Image via Wikipedia

Finding the perfect gift for a young martial artist doesn't have to be a chore. Whether you are shopping for your own child or someone else's child, there are plenty of cool gifts you can buy that will make him or her smile with joy. Here are some top five suggestions with extra grin factor included.

Century Kid Kick Wavemaster Punching Bag

There is no better way to encourage a child's martial arts interest than by giving them something they can practice with at home. The Century Kid Kick Wavemaster Punching Bag is less than $100 and will provide the young martial artist with hours and hours of exercise and entertainment as well as practice. The bag comes in three adjustable sizes so that as the child grows, he or she can still continue to use the bag.

The Martial Arts Training Diary for Kids

This book is a must have for every young martial artist. The book includes martial arts games, stories and activities as well as pages to log their accomplishments, favorite styles, personal best moves and more. The book is intended for children ages 7 and up. For around $10, you can give a young martial artist a gift he or she will love for years.

Foam Nunchakus

What young martial artist doesn't secretly dream of deftly twirling nunchakus around like an action movie star? You can find a nice pair online for $5 to $10 and the foam covering helps ensure that he or she won't get hurt while learning how to use them. For extra fun, add a beginners' level or kid-oriented training DVD to your gift so he or she can learn from the pros.

A Gift Certificate

Many martial arts schools have pro shops with training items, t-shirts and other school specific merchandise. Contact the young martial artist's school and see if they offer gift certificates. School gift certificates are great because the student can pick out exactly what he or she wants without having to ask Mom or Dad to pay for it.

Training DVDs

Turn tube time into activity time. There is a wide selection of training DVDs for kids that cover all the various forms of martial arts. Most martial arts DVDs are relatively inexpensive and you can buy them through large retailers like Amazon.com or specific martial arts websites. Another plus is that the videos often reinforce the same values students learn at the dojo, so the videos are educational as well as fun.

Martial Artists, especially young ones, thrive on encouragement and accomplishment. Any gift you can give them that helps support their interest will be greatly appreciated. The most important thing to consider is where the student is on his or her martial arts journey and pick gifts that you know he or she will personally enjoy.

About the Author: Buford Wadell loves studying the martial arts and works to foster that same love in his children. He recommends self defense classes to anyone who is worried about their personal safety.

5 Essential Items of MMA Clothing

Fujii (left) vs. Cody Welchlin (right)Image via Wikipedia

While having a strong punch, lasting endurance and a killer kick are critical to succeeding in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, the following 5 essential items of mma clothing will help you excel in your training and performance. Having the right gloves, shirt, shorts, socks and shoes will ensure the best and most comfortable training experience.

The Right Gloves

An essential component for training, owning the right pair of gloves can make or break you in the cage. Gloves or hand wraps will provide a barrier that can prevent bruising or injuries such as broken hand bones. Shop for comfort and protection to ensure a proper level of safety. Leather gloves with a sheet of foam inside provide an effective barrier. Double stitching ensures a stronger, more durable product that can withstand punch after punch.

A Breathable Shirt

Wear a shirt that will wick away moisture as you break a sweat. Breathable shirts are available in a wide variety of styles and designs that will help keep you cool. Many also contain antimicrobial odor control to keep you fresh even after a tough workout or fight. Quick drying fabrics are also available that can give you long-lasting comfort. Look for a soft, durable fabric that won't cause chafing and a snug fit that still allows a full range of motion.

Shorts that Let you Move

Choosing the right pair of shorts will greatly improve your mobility both in training and in a fight. Your shorts are one of the most important pieces of mma clothing. Focus on fit and durability. Make sure you have a full range of motion and look for rip proof fabrics that can withstand multiple hits without splitting. Moisture-wicking fabrics will also keep you more comfortable when you are breaking a sweat.

Socks that Soak up the Sweat

Breathable socks are an essential piece of mma clothing that many fighters overlook. Make sure you train in a knit sock with moisture wicking properties for maximum comfort. Look for lightweight high performance athletic socks. Wearing socks in the gym will also help to prevent athlete's foot and other infections.

Supportive Shoes

Choose shoes that offer proper heel support, protect the ankle by holding it tight and have good breaking power. Proper air ventilation is essential for keeping your feet comfortable through a hard training session. It is worth investing in a well-constructed, durable pair of shoes that you can train in for years. Ultralight shoes will give you the most freedom of movement and mimic a barefoot feel.

Let your mma clothing be an asset to your training. By choosing pieces with durable, breathable construction that allow full freedom of movement, you will have a more comfortable and effective training session, leading to a more successful fight.

UFC Owners to Offer Insurance for Fighters

Ultimate Fighting ChampionshipImage by ATempletonPhoto.com via Flickr

Zuffa, LLC is a company that owns both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the largest mixed martial arts promotion company in the world, and Strikeforce, a mixed martial arts and kickboxing organization. As Zuffa deals with such a large number of fighters (over 350 are under contract with UFC and Strikeforce), it feels a responsibility to them and that’s why the company announced on May 9, 2011 that it would be extending its insurance policy to provide year-round customized insurance for any injury suffered by an athlete signed on with either Strikeforce or UFC. Before this change, Zuffa would give athletes $100,000 if they sustained any injuries during competition. Athletes were not covered if they were injured outside of competition or in training. Two notable athletes that found this out the hard way were Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar. Mir was hit by a car when driving his motorcycle and was unable to fight for over 19 months, while Lesnar was unable to fight for several months due to being stricken with diverticulitis.

These new insurance measures were not undertaken as a result of government intervention – Zuffa chose to take this step on its own. Although the previous insurance provided by Zuffa was enough to meet or exceed the guidelines set out by the Athletic Commission, Zuffa was not pleased with the amount of coverage it provided to its athletes. UFC president Dana White says that providing this type of comprehensive insurance was something Zuffa has wanted to do ever since it bought UFC in 2001. For several years Zuffa searched for an insurance company to provide “training insurance,” but until now it was unable to do so simply because Zuffa could not find a company willing to insure mixed martial artists. Zuffa owner Lorenzo Fertitta talked about his experiences of going to insurance companies, asking them to insure 350-400 fighters and getting the door slammed in his face – no one was interested in insuring high risk fighters. That all changed when Zuffa was finally able to come to an agreement with the A+ rated HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc. It was a three year search in order to find this insurance, which will go into effect June 2011. This is the first time that a company of this type has provided such comprehensive insurance to its athletes.

The new policy will cover all athletes under contract to UFC and Strikeforce whether they live in the United States or not. The coverage applies no matter where the athletes are injured. Zuffa is going to be paying for all the premiums – the athletes will not be required to fork over a cent. It doesn’t matter whether an athlete is scheduled to fight or not – if they’re injured, the insurance will kick in. In addition to injuries caused by accidents, the policy also covered training-related illnesses and other debilitating diseases, although it does not cover minor illnesses like a cold or flu. Athletes will also receive free life and dental insurance under this new policy.

It’s Not Your Average Boxing Match!

Despite is brutality and use of blunt physical force, mixed martial arts (MMA) cage fighting has risen to the top of spectator sports in popularity in recent years. In the sport, two competitors are pitted against each other in the “Octagon”, an eight-sided, fenced in arena. The fighters have no body protection aside from small, thin gloves on each hand, which have little padding and can easily cause facial lacerations and bodily bruising. The match usually consists of five 5 minute rounds, and is over when one fighter has been knocked into submission, held down long enough to “tap out”, or, if the fight lasts through each round, it is decided by a panel of judges.

Because of its extreme physical demands, advanced martial arts technique, and the brutality it can exemplify, some may wonder how such a sport ever came to be. The sport was somewhat underground around the globe until 1993, when a Brazilian Jui-Jitsu fighter by the name of Royce Gracie beat three separate opponents in a row in a total of less than five minutes. Once the public caught wind of this groundbreaking event, mixed martial arts cage fighting grew enormously in popularity, and in 1999 the International Sport Combat Federation (ISCF) was founded as the sports governing body. The sport began being shown on Pay Per view into the 21st century, and quickly gained popularity until in 2006, an “Ultimate Fighting Championship” (UFC) match rivaled some of the highest selling boxing matches of all time. In 2005, the United States Army also began to realize mixed martial arts effectiveness and began its own Army Combative Championships in its own Army Combatives School.

The most popular combinations of martial arts in cage fighting today include the techniques of “stand up”, “clinch”, and “ground”. “Stand up” techniques consist of kickboxing, boxing, karate, and Muay Thai to work on a fighter’s elbowing, kicking, punching, and footwork. “Clinch” involves Greco-Roman wrestling, sambo, freestyle, and Judo to work on takedowns, throws, and clinching in the fighter’s technique. “Ground” is composed of shoot wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and sambo which enhance a fighter’s ability to execute and defend against submission holds, as well as their ground control and position. Mixed martial arts cage fighting is also incredibly demanding on the cardiovascular system, and fighters often cross train with speed drills, strength training, triathlon, and flexibility exercises.

Mixed martial arts cage fighting, despite its image conveyed by the media, is actually quite safe and injury free. There had never been a death in the sport until 2007, when a fighter collapsed after being knocked out, and subsequently suffered a stroke in his brain, never regaining consciousness after. Since its huge growth in popularity, MMA schools have popped up all over the United States and the world, and promise to provide a safe, positive environment for students to build self confidence and physical fitness.
