A Dwayne Haskins Heisman is in the Works
There are two other candidates for the trophy, namely, Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray. Whoever wins, however, the Buckeyes will take the credit, just the same.
So Dwayne Haskins Heisman or not, all three contenders have a legitimate claim to fame. And Ohio State is still the big winner when the dust clears after trophy voting time. Tua Tagovailoa, Kyler Murray or Dwayne Haskins are all excellent quarterbacks, so does it really matter who wins the prize?
The Dwayne Haskins Heisman jury won't be out until Sunday. But it would be interesting to find out what the verdict is going to be even though as everyone knows, it's already in the bag as far as the Buckeyes are concerned. The straw polls suggest that it's really a tight race between Tagovailoa and Murray right now.
However, in the ensuing days as we head into Sunday, a Dwayne Haskins Heisman is still not a foregone conclusion. Here's why. The quarterback's stats speak for themselves. Just imagine. The man led his team to a 12-1 record at speeds and touchdowns that are hard to beat.
Clearly, it took the quarterback to create unalterable history for Ohio State. Just consider how the player secured a Buckeye victory against Michigan and Northwestern in recent memory, and you'll see why a Dwayne Haskins Heisman can't be far behind.
A Haskins rally in the Midwest will definitely raise the prospects even higher. For his part, Murray's claim to the trophy rests on his FBS record, his yardage, touchdowns, and interceptions. How well he does in the Southwest region will certainly add to his claim to fame.
On the other hand, Tagovailoa is the season's front-runner: no surprises there. Plus, he's widely projected to be in great shape for the South.
A Dwayne Haskins Heisman isn't cast in stone. But the same goes for a Heisman for Tagovailoa or for Murray. Nobody's perfect, and the closer we look at all Heisman candidates, the more we're likely to find imperfections.
Whether it's a College Football Playoff loss, the wide-open Big 12 or the struggle for a SEC championship, finding fault will always be a possibility. Still, when all is said and done, the big three all have a reason to deserve a Heisman in their own unique ways. After all, they are already winners from the way they contributed to their team or how they improved their respective plays.
