There are many women in the world that have paved the way for other women in the world of sports.  There are three women that are considered the best female pool players of all time.

Jeanette Lee:  Lee is one of the most popular and most talented female pool players in history.  She began playing pool in the late 1980s and went pro in the early 1990s.  Lee has won over 25 titles and in the billiard circuit she earned the nickname The Black Widow because she has been said to "eat her opponents alive".  In 2001 Lee earned a gold medal in the World Games.

Allison Fisher:  Fisher is from England and is one of the best female pool players in the world and goes by the moniker "The Duchess of Doom".  She began playing pool in the early 1990s and became a professional billiard player in 1995.  In 2009 she won the gold medal while representing the United Kingdom in the World Games.

Ewa Laurance: Laurance started playing pool as a teenager and soon began competing in the 1980s. She is known as "The Striking Viking".  Laurance has earned over 20 titles.  She has since retired and is now a sports announcer on ESPN.  She is also a member of The Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fall and was the WPBP President thrice over.

The Rocky Road to the Los Angeles Kings Championship

First suiting up in royally themed hockey jerseys of purple and gold, the Los Angeles Kings were one of six expansion-era teams to supplement the Original Six franchises in an effort to stifle the growth of competitive leagues, such as the Western Hockey League. Though the team's record has been inconsistent and generally mediocre through its history, it nonetheless has boasted some of the most dynamic names in hockey and has contended for the Stanley Cup by advancing to the playoffs 24 times.

Breaking In

The Kings busted out of the gate in their early years, making the playoffs in their first two seasons and earning a home winning record during the first - the only expansion team to do so. Unfortunately, affairs took a turn for the worse in the following seasons as the Kings found themselves on the wrong side of several trades, along with poor drafting.

The "Triple Crown"

With light at the end of the tunnel, the Kings began to develop a team identity as a defense-first team and soon became the most effective defense in the league; compounding this development was the acquisition of the spectacular goaltender Rogie Vachon, and a few years later, generational superstar Marcel Dionne, who centered the "Triple Crown Line" alongside Dave Taylor and Charlie Simmer, both relative unknowns until this dynamite combination developed into one of the highest-scoring lines in the NHL. Playoff success was more frequent during his decade-plus tenure, but the team was unable to eliminate more than one team a year and advance to the Conference Finals.
Unbelievable Gretzky Trade
The hockey world and especially Canadians were stunned to hear that Wayne Gretzky, fresh off of four straight Stanley Cup championships at the helm of the Edmonton Oilers, had been traded to the Los Angeles Kings; the primary consideration traded in return was millions of dollars. Gretzky joined a respectable group of NHLers headed by emerging star Luc Robitaille and Bernie Nicholls, and the addition transformed the team into a dangerous contender. The gimmicky colors of the past were replaced with sleek black and white hockey jerseys, and the symbolic change transferred to the ice where the Kings set team records in the regular season and played respectable playoff hockey; however, they were ousted by Gretzky's former Oilers. Finally, the 1993 playoffs saw the Kings advance to the Finals and nearly clinch their first cup, only to be easily dispatched in five games.

Decline and Rebuildng

Bankruptcy and a depleted roster plagued the Kings for a decade after their near-miss, with poor management and coaching decisions resulting in a revolving door for these positions. Franchise players like Wayne Gretzky. Jari Kurri and Rob Blake, as well as raising star prospect Olli Jokinen were sent to other teams, but over time they were replaced by solid draft picks like Alexander Frolov, Lubomir Visnovsky and Michael Cammalleri.

Sudden Re-emergence

During the post-lockout era beginning in 2005, the Kings iced a struggling team while in the middle of a rebuilding process. The next several seasons saw promising young prospects earn spots in the line-up and become the eventual foundation. Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Mike Richards, Drew Doughty, and goaltending prodigy Jonathan Quick took the team by the reins and established the Kings as a playoff-bound team. Throughout the 2011-2012 season, they rose and fell in the standings and squeaked into the post-season as the bottom seed, however amazing performances throughout the rosters sent the team into a higher gear which demolished opposing teams and culminated in the first Stanley Cup victory in franchise history. Scarily, the team still has room for improvement and looks to contend for years to come.

I'm a Celebrity...Get Me to The Races!

Elizabeth Hurley - cropped

Aintree, Cheltenham and the Grand National are all popular haunts with some of the UKs glitterati. Everyone from footballers and their wives and TV personalities, to reality TV ‘stars’, put on their finery to enjoy a flutter at the races. When horseracing season is in full swing, we all love to see who was there, who wore what, and most importantly – who they were betting on.

But for some of these celebrities, sitting on the sidelines is no longer enough. In order to get closer to the action, more and more famous faces have taken the plunge into racehorse ownership. No longer limited to pub syndicates or Arab Sheiks, the world of racehorse ownership is littered with famous faces.

Increasingly popular with the sporting world, everyone from golfer Lee Westwood to Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney have recently experienced racing success. And we all know that The Queen is passionate about horseracing, but you might be surprised at some of the other famous faces you might bump into at the Grand National:

Dame Judi Dench

National treasure and quintessentially British film star Judi Dench may not be the stereotypical racehorse owner. But thanks to the training expertise of Mark Tompkins, her horse Smokey Oakey has experienced relative success at some of the most prestigious races in Britain. The James Bond actress is a regular feature at Newmarket, and has a number of horses in the care of Tompkins.

Elizabeth Hurley

Another famous actress, Elizabeth Hurley, has turned her passion for horse racing into ownership. Hurley is part of the Highclere Racing Syndicate and is one of several owners with interest in Census. She is regularly seen at some of the biggest racing events in the UK, cheering on her winning horse.

Ant and Dec

Geordie duo Ant and Dec are better known for their TV presenting and dabble in the music business. Few people associate them with the world of horse racing. Newcastle’s finest tasted victory twice in 2012 with their horse, Primaeval.

Jeremy Kyle

The chat show host, who has recently found fame in the US, is more used to dealing with people than horses. In fact, Kyle owns several horses in partnership with his wife. The couple have experienced great success with their horse in jump racing in 2010 and 2011.

Freddie Starr

In 1994, eighties wild child Freddie Starr became famous for something other than the alleged eating of small rodents. His horse, Miinnehorna, won the Grand National, despite a poor showing at the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier in the month.

Other famous faces you might expect to see cheering on their horses include; Sir Alex Ferguson, Michael Owen, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jodie Kidd, and Denise Lewis. The sport has always been a Great British institution, but is growing in popularity with both the A-list and Joe Public. So next time you place a bet on the National, you might just be backing one of these celebrity-owned horses.

Motorcross: Ones to Watch

The high-octane world of outdoor Motocross is in for another year of thrills spills and monster jumps. The FIM Motocross World Championship is the premier championship of motocross racing and the 2012 contenders are already fighting it out for the sport’s top prize. The series began on Easter Weekend 2012 in the Netherlands, and will conclude later in the year with the prestigious Motocross of Nations in Lommel, Belgium. The competition is divided into three distinct classes: MX1, MX2, and MX3. Below is run-down of three of this year’s hot favourites in the MX1 and MX2 categories.

Tony Cairoli (ITA) Red Bull KTM
Undoubtedly the bookies’ favourite for the MX1-GP world championship Antonio "Tony" Cairoli is the Italian five-time Grand Prix world champion. Cairoli began his dazzling Grand Prix career in 2002 riding a Yamaha. He quickly rose to prominence becoming the FIM world champion in the MX2-GP class in 2005. He won it again in 2007 as well as winning that year’s English Supercross    championship. In 2009 Cairoli claimed the MX1-GP title for the first time. After a move to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, he successfully defended his title in 2010 and 2011. The charismatic Italian is certainly the man to beat in the MX1 class.
Clement Desalle (BEL) Suzuki
With an impressive list of GP wins to his name Desalle has been knocking on the door of the MX1 championship for two or three years now. In the 2009 season he placed third in the championship, riding for the LS Motors/Honda Team. After a move to Suzuki in 2010 he placed second behind Cairoli and in 2011 he won four races between April and August before bowing out due to injury. This year he will be looking to take crucial step towards becoming champion for the first time. His team will be hoping he can do it too: this is Suzuki’s ninth season competing in the championship and so far they have only won it once, way back in 2007, with another Belgian, Steve Ramon.
Jeffrey Herlings (NED) Red Bull KTM
‘Flying’ Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings is the man to catch in the MX2 category. Strongly tipped to win his first FIM World MX2 Championship, Herlings showed his speed last season winning several times. Unfortunately he narrowly lost the rider’s championship to the formidable German Ken Roczen. But with Roczen now racing Supercross in America, Herlings has a great chance to go and grab his first FIM World Motocross Championship.
So strap on your helmet, your boots and don’t' forget to pack your windshield repair kit – with this kind of talent in the field, the rest of the season should be one hell of a ride!
